Are Mountain Gorillas Dangerous Species?

Will the mountain Gorillas hurt me during the trek?

Most Visitors frequently ask if mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable forest national park are dangerous. The primates are gentle and shy though they are dominant and strong. The mountain Gorillas in Uganda are habituated in a process that takes 2 years before they are opened to trekkers these years of Habituation makes them used to humans being around them.

When taking a gorilla trekking adventure always follow the instructions from the tour guides of standing meters away from them, make sure when taking photographs switch off the flash and avoid getting between their families.

In Uganda there has not been any registered aggression to tourists by the primate’s so far.

Please note just like any wild animals if mountain gorillas are threatened they do attack Mountain gorillas have dominance fights when 2 Mountain Gorilla groups meet and this is sometimes fatal because Silverbacks fight to death.

Humans are the number one threat to the primates encroaching their habitats creating settlements around them , bush burning but this has been stopped after sensitization of the locals in these areas in Uganda poaching is not heard of late but this still holds in the Virunga national park in the DRC.

The primates are also threatened by human transmitted diseases theses are mainly carries by the visitors trekking them this is why people with diseases that can be transmitted to the gorillas like cough, flue are not allowed to trek the primates.

Where should I go for Gorilla Trekking Democratic republic of Congo, Rwanda or Uganda?

This is one of the questions that most people planning a gorilla trekking adventure in Africa ask themselves. Is it Uganda or Rwanda? I run down a list of advantages and disadvantages and I give our take on a gorilla trekking adventure in Africa. This adventure is an epic one and it must be done by everyone at-least in their lifetime reason being these endangered animals are only in the 3 countries of Uganda, Rwanda and the democratic Republic of Congo and no mountain gorilla is in any Zoo in the world .
The Democratic Republic of Congo has the primates in the Virunga national park but the country is highly volatile with conflicts breaking out more frequently we would not recommend a gorilla trekking adventure there. Prices of the gorilla trekking permits in the park costs 400 USD the saving of $200 in relation to Uganda to trek the primates in Congo is not worthy it compared to the risks that can lead to loss of life.

How to Get a Gorilla Trekking Permit in Uganda and Rwanda ?

Gorilla tracking permits MUST be purchased in advance; it’s advisable to book your spot on one of the sought after tourist activities on the African continent to book your Trekking permit 6 months to 1 year in advance. When to Go To See the Mountain Gorillas in Africa?

Tracking of these primates can be done all year round in Rwanda and Uganda the only challenge wit trekking of the primates in the rainy months of march to June and October to December is that there is a lot of rainfall in the Bwindi impenetrable forest and the volcano national park making trekking quite a challenge most tourists opt for visiting in the months of June to September and December to February. However the low season time of the year gives you chance to get cheaper trekking Gorilla Trekking permits.
