Mountain Elgon is an extinct volcano in eastern Uganda and the 4th tallest mountain in East Africa located on the boarder of Uganda and Kenya and 238 km from Uganda’s capital Kampala with the mountain’s highest peak being 4321m and the major tribes on the mountain are the Bagisu, Sabiny and the Ndorobos that dwell in forest of Benet.
Mt Elgon was once Africa’s highest mountain taller than Mountain Kilimanjaro’s which currently stands at 5,895m above sealevell but because of Millennia of erosion Elgon reduced to 4,321m and Mount Elgon National Park has over 300 species of birds like the endangered Lammergeyer, Many plant species and animals like Buffalos, Tree hyrax , Duikers, leopards and lots of Primates.
In Addition to this, Elgon has gorges, caves, and hot springs giving you great opportunities to engage in many activities like hiking, Nature walks among others.

Hiking Mount Elgon can be done all year round the only challenge in the wet season months of March to May and September to November the mountain receives heavy season making the trails very slippery but the best time to hike mountain Elgon is during the dry season months of June – August or December – February .

How to Get to Mountain Elgon | Getting to Mountain Elgon
Mount Elgon National Park is 235 KM from Uganda’s capital and the best route from Kampala is through through Jinja to Iganga, Through Tirinyi Road to Mbale town and the best place to climb is the kapchwora side which is the northern part of the national park.
