Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park Uganda
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park – is one of the best travel destinations in Uganda famous for being home for the mountain Gorillas trekking. The park is rich in fauna and flora with countless species of butterfly species, Primates, birds and other wildlife unique only to only this impenetrable forest.
The forest got its name impenetrable forest from the dense vegetation that makes exploration of the forest very challenging because of the dense nature of vegetation in the forest and the word “Bwindi” means “darkness” in the local language and the darkness is caused by the dense vegetation and canopies that make Bwindi dark once you go hiking in this park you will observe this.
The national park is located in southwestern Uganda on the rim of the Rift Valley with the mist-covered landscape is an ancient and very biologically varied rainforest in Uganda dating more than 25,000 years with 400 varied plant species.
Bwindi covers 327 km2 a landscape that is steep, slippery valleys and high, draughty ridges. The terrain is not easy to manage but worth the effort to trek because it gives you a fulfilling and a lifetime memory.
Bwindi impenetrable national park is home to over 50 percent of the worlds mountain gorilla population that is currently registered at around 1020 currently a species one can only find in the forest, the Volcano national park in Rwanda and the Virunga forest in the democratic republic of Congo no mountain gorilla lives in any Zoo in the world.
In addition, the park is rich in biodiversity with high counts of 129 mammal species and 202 butterfly species, 214 bird species and 7 diurnal primate species, species 163 species of trees and 104 fern species, 16species of trees only found in the Bwindi area of Uganda like Lavoa swynnertonii that is an endangered tree species.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is home to a great number of endangered animal species worldwide with a tally of 9 and the famous Primate the mountain gorilla that the national park is associated with, the L’Hoest’s Monkey and the African giant swallowtail, the African elephant poached mainly for the ivory, birds like Chaplin’s flycatcher, African broadbill, Grauer’s Rush Warbler and cream-banded swallowtail.
Animal species like buffaloes and leopard got extinct from Bwindi impenetrable national park because of extensive poaching in the area before the conservation efforts in the national park started and this was from mainly the hunter-gathering communities that lived in the Bwindi community used to eat these animals.
