Bigodi Wetlands Sanctuary | Bigodi Birds Watching
Bigodi Swamp is located 6 kilometers from Kibale National park famous for birds and its biodiversity and natural vegetation. The name “Bigodi” in the local language Rutooro translates as to walk wearily.
The Bigodi wetland is rich in wildlife like bush pigs, red Colobus monkeys, blue monkey, baboons, sitatungas, bush bucks, black and white Colobus, chimpanzees which can also be viewed in the nearby Kibale National Park.
The morning is the ideal time for bird watching and the afternoon walk is great for Chimpanzees tracking
The sanctuary is run by Kibale Association for Rural and Environmental Development (KAFRED) & it’s one of the greenest places in Uganda. Guided tours in Bigodi sanctuary are done in two phase’s ie. Morning at 7:30 am and at 3:00pm in the afternoon.

Primate and butterfly spotting
The sanctuary is rich in butterflies with hundreds of species that can be seen by butterflies’ lovers in the area. In addition to this the swamp has a great number of primates giving you a chance for chimpanzee trekking in Bigodi.

Birding in Bigodi Sanctuary
Bigodi sanctuary is rich in birds having over 138 registered bird species that can be seen in the wetland like the
grand blue Turaco barbet, White spotted fluff tail, western nictor, , Grey winged robin chat, hairy breasted flycatcher, Bocage’s Bush shrike, brown crowned Tchagra, Flycatchers, crowned eagle, the African Pitta, Blue breasted kingfisher, Collared Apalis, Brown chested Alethe, Black bee- eater, Abyssinian ground thrush, Green breasted Pitta, Black capped Apalis, Purple breasted sunbirdweaver birds, cuckoos, , Black Gonolek, Hornbills, little Greenbul, Brown throated wattle eye, white breasted Negrofinch, Black and white flycatcher, grey winged robin, yellow billed barbet, white tailed ant thrush, western Nicator and the purple breasted sunbird.
Bird watching can either be done at the clearly marked areas like the viewing platforms or in the forest.
