3 days Mgahinga hike | Hiking and Nature Walks in Mgahinga Gorilla national park
This 3 day Mgahinga hike takes you to mountain Mgahinga in western Uganda 3,474 meters high . Mgahinga is one of the mountains in the Virunga group of mountains that span from the democratic republic of Congo and Rwanda.
Some of the activities that can be carried out on this mountain other than hiking are birding the park has 179-184 species that include the ibis, double-collared sunbird, pin-tailed whydah,grey-capped warbler, , speckled mousebird, stone chat, wax bills, firefinch, yellow-vented bulbul, white-naped raven, Rwenzori turraco, black kite, blue-headed coucal, Rwenzori batis, paradise fly-catcher, Rwenzori nightjar.
The mountain is also the home to the mountain gorillas the endangered species with the habituated nyakagezi gorilla family living on this mountain .
The mountain also has many primates like the golden monkeys an endeared primate species living in the Albertine rift valley
Mgahinga has 76 species of mammals in the vegetation like giant forest hogs, forest buffaloes, bush pigs, elephants, bushbucks, side striped jackals, golden cats, black fronted duikers and south African porcupines. But the challenge is they are hard to spot in the under growth in the forest.
Hiking the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes gives you an opportunity to see many forest birds, wild vegetation, the rugezi swamp, bamboo forests and beautiful views of lakes and farming villages.
Day 1 – Transfer Kampala to Kisoro town
After breakfast, we start our journey to western Uganda we stop briefly at the equator to take photos and buy souvenirs with an enroute lunch in Mbarara Igongo centre .a journey that lasts 540 kilometers you will have a chance to observe the rural Uganda life and the beautiful hills, coffee and banana plantations and the magnificent Ankole cows.
Day 2 – Mgahinga mountain volcano climbing.
We begin our hike of Mgahinga in Mgahinga national park after breakfast in western Uganda and the park gives you a great view of 3-countries Rwanda, Uganda, and Congo when the clouds are clear the mountain gives you a great view of lake Edward in queen Elizabeth national park, Burundi and Rwenzori mountain.
You will get chance to interact with the locals to experience their cultures like the bafubira and Batwa (pygmies) who live in the mountain.
Day 3 – Transfer to Kampala.
After your breakfast, we return to Uganda’s capital Kampala through Mbarara and the equator a journey that will last over 6 hours.
